Agricultural Scenario

Agriculture is the most important sector of state economy. The state has an interesting land use i.e. 80.48% forest cover, 13.44% agriculture and the rest are inhabited areas, rivers and streams. According to state records, the total area under agriculture in 2007 accounts for 222,787 ha which is 13.44% of the total land area of the state. The area under cultivation are - Irrigated 64,490 ha and Jhum 1,31,349 ha. (Adding value to Shifting Cultivation in Nagaland, India, 2007)


Mokokchung district is endowed with varying farming areas with varied climatic conditions which contribute to the district unique ecosystems to raise different type of crops.


Seventy percent of the farmers in Mokokchung district practice Jhum cultivation. The total area under agriculture in the district is 108554 ha and the average Jhum cycle at  present is 10 years. The main crops grown in the district are Paddy (WRC, TRC, Jhum), Tapioca, Maize, Rice bean, French bean, soybean, Mustard, Rapeseed, Potato and Colocassia
